bio

Derek Lubangakene hails from Kampala, Uganda. With four elder brothers, he learnt quite early the appreciation for good art, be it books, music and movies. Movies and books were more than just an escape for him, they presented a way to express himself creatively and thus he has been writing since he was seventeen. Though only recently started to show dividend for his work. Though he has no formal education in creative writing (save for being a Maisha Films Lab alumni) his dedication to learning and improving his craft have never diminished. A sociable, highly-intuitive, hardworking writer, he also pays attention to all aspects of the creative endeavour. In the few minor roles he has assisted in stage plays and once on the set of a low-budget movie, he tried his hand at direction and art-production, further broadening his experience and making his writing richer. His writing has been published in Escape Pod, Apex Magazine, Omenana, Enkare Review, Prairie Schooner, River River Journal, Lawino Magazine, Kalahari Review, among others. As well as written two feature length screenplays and a TV drama pilot. All heavily reliant on contemporary, though very African Kampala settings. He is hard at work on another feature-length screenplay.

Other than the MultiChoice Talent Factor, Derek can think of no better place to learn from the best and grow as a screenwriter and artist.
