Since completing a diploma in TV and video production, Kenyan Shilla Gathoni Gachango has been working as a videographer, under the mentorship of Isaac Masiga, a professional filmmaker and producer. She dreams of becoming a successful film director. When she does, the 23-year-old wants to create opportunities similar to MTF that will spearhead local film festivals and competitions and inspire young, up-and-coming filmmakers.

Shilla believes this is important because, “the challenges facing African filmmakers vary from the lack of technical skills to many up-and-coming filmmakers not knowing how to use professional equipment, never mind afford it themselves”.

If she were to have creative license to produce a TV show, it would be a reality TV show in which everyday individuals could learn everything there is to know about film production. She hopes that this would not only increase the industry’s calibre of skills, but also encourage more youngsters to successfully pursue careers in the creative industries. And perhaps it would inspire more Africans to embrace African content too.

Besides filmmaking, Shilla is also passionate about writing and wants to create “films about the untold tales of the beginnings and roots of the African culture, so as to preserve its history as we embark on the journey of a new era”. She draws her inspiration from Nigerian actress and singer Genevive Nnaji and Ghanaian actor Majid Michel.

“I hope to gain new skills and knowledge across all areas of production and incorporate my creative ideas to make good quality films. Learning from the industry giants will help me achieve that,” say says of MTF.
