When you ask Amos Mwape what his dream career is, the 23-year-old filmmaker from Lusaka, Zambia, says he is pretty much living it. All he wants to be is a filmmaker, and to continue growing and developing his skills to be the best possible filmmaker he can be.
Thanks to the opportunity being afforded to him through the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy, Amos is able to do just that. “I think the biggest challenge in Africa’s creative film and TV industry is that most people don’t know how to use the equipment properly, and don’t want to follow the rules and principles that guide filmmaking. I am so grateful for the opportunity to join the MTF programme, because it means I will now have access to the education that will improve my skills and talent, and ensure I am always working within those industry parameters,” he explains.
Amos is inspired by producer, cinematographer and editor, Nixon D.Y Banda. “Though not well known, he is a unique filmmaker who thinks outside the box and loves to create unbelievable scenarios and astonishing stories,” he says, adding that it is this uniqueness in Africa’s film and TV industry as well as the stories behind the art that ignite his own creativity.
To this end, Amos believes his contribution to the sector will ultimately revolve around creative cinematography and unique characters.
Aside from filmmaking, he also enjoys playing instruments and drawing.
